The Dominica Sustainable Energy Corporation Installs Wind Turbine on Dominica
by Thomson Fontaine
The Dominica Sustainable Energy Corporation (DSEC) recently embarked on the pilot phase of its sustainable electricity program for Dominica. The group's engineers installed a one kilowatt wind turbine at DSEC House in the South- East village of Delices.
In the first phase of the project, the production levels of wind energy will be monitored to prove the viability and sustainability of wind energy production on the island. The model home serviced by the system will be the site for tours by homeowners, students, government officials and other stakeholders on the island.
The successful installation of the turbine marks the beginning of DSEC's commitment to the promotion and development of sustainable energy for Dominica. The group was formed in
August 2001, and formally recognized at the Dominica Diaspora Symposium held in New York in December of the same year.
Since its formation, DSEC has received a mandate from the Minister of Communication and Works Reginald Austrie to pursue development of a wind energy alternative to Dominica's dependence on imported fossil fuel.
The management team is headed by research scientist Dominican Bevin Etienne (inset above), who is a lead researcher and Ph D student at the University of Maryland's CALCE (Computer Aided Life Cycle Engineering) Center, which is the most advanced center for energy studies and failure analysis in the world.
The team also includes local and overseas-based Dominican engineers, electricians, and other resource persons.
The primary focus of the company is to facilitate the Government of Dominica's initiative as part of its Integrated Development Plan (IDP) to provide cost-effective, renewable, sustainable and viable forms of energy for use in Dominica and eventually in the wider Caribbean.
In the second phase of its program, DSEC is expected to embark on the setting up of multiple wind turbines in strategic locations all over Dominica to integrate within the existing Island-wide grid, with the objective of eliminating the need for fossil fuel power generation on the Island.
