A Sad Farewell In Tampa Florida
by Thomson Fontaine
"On a bright day last Saturday in Tampa, Florida, Shadia Rene, Felix Jean-Jacque Kali, and Felicienne Marisol Kali were laid to rest. Family and friends from Dominica, Guadeloupe, the US Virgin Islands and elsewhere around the world came to say farewell to three children taken away too soon. Hundreds of miles away in a Miami hospital their mother Stella Kali nee Zamore remains critically ill in a coma.
Felix, 14, and Felicienne, 11, were killed in a crash on Alligator Alley on New Years day, and Shadia, 20, was removed from life support at Broward General Medical Center and pronounced dead Jan. 4. Jocelyn Kali, 40, husband of Stella and father of Felix and Felicienne, was injured in the crash and was able to attend the funeral.
Shadia was born in Dominica and dreamed of becoming a model. Felix was born in Guadeloupe, the birthplace of his father and Felicienne was born in St. Martin where the family moved before living in St. Thomas and finally migrating to Tampa about a year ago. Both Felix and Felicienne were fluent in French, loved school and enjoyed playing with their friends and family.
The three caskets, one white, one blue and one pink, bearing the remains were adorned with wreaths of red, blue, yellow and white flowers. Family members spoke lovingly of the three, and Lennox Zamore, an uncle thanked U.S. Senator Bill Frist, R-Tenn., the Senate majority leader, for the assistance he gave moments after the crash.
