Rome, Italy (TDN) -- Cardinals of the catholic church has elected a New Pope. He is Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina. The first non European to hold this position. The new pope has selected his name as Francis the First after Saint Francisco of Assisi patron saint of poverty.
Pope Francis replaces Pope Benedict who resigned suddenly. The first Popoe to do so in modern history. He takes over at a time when the Church is wrestling with different scandals and facing a decided fall in its membership.
Bergoglio is considered to be an accomplished intellectual, having studied theology in Germany. He played a leading role during the Argentine economic crisis becoming a voice of conscience, and made him a potent symbol of the costs globalization can impose on the world's poor.
He has a reputation for personal simplicity having lived in a simple apartment rather than the archbishop's palace. He is also said to have given up his chauffeured limousine in favor of taking the bus to work, and cooks his own meals.
