Caracas, Venezuela (TDN) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez appears to have hit a major setback in his recovery with the news that he has a severe new respiratory infection. The announcement was made in a brief statement read on national television by Communications Minister Ernesto Villegas late Monday.
The cancer stricken president returned to Venezuela on February 18, 2013 after undergoing his fourth operation in Cuba but has not been seen in public since. Villegas described his condition as being "very delicate."
Without providing details or saying what kind of cancer Chavez was suffering from, Villegas noted that he was undergoing a strong regimen of chemotherapy.
He also said that Chavez was "standing by Christ and life, conscious of the difficulties he faces," and lashed out at “the corrupt Venezuelan right” for developing scenarios of violence over the leader’s illness “as a pretext for foreign intervention.”
Meanwhile, Opposition leader Henrique Capriles who was defeated by Chavez in last year’s presidential elections accused Venezuela’s government of repeatedly lying about President Hugo Chavez’s condition.
He claims that the government is not reporting truthfully on Chavez’s illness and that he is waiting to see what they will say in the coming days.
Capriles have also called for Chavez to be either sworn in or declare himself incapable and call new elections. According to the constitution he should have been sworn in on Jan. 10, but Venezuela’s Supreme Court intervened to allow him more time.
