Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Former calypso King winner and veteran Dominican calypsonian de Hunter is out of the 2013 finals less than a week after winning a place at the semi finals.
Hunter withdrew from the finals following allegations that he cheated during his most recent performance. A grainy video released on the internet showed what appeared to be words written on the palm of the singer’s hand as he sang his famous song “Another Mother Has Lost a Son.”
He told the local media that his decision to withdraw from the competition was in “the best interest of calypso.
“As a committed and dedicated calypsonian it is indeed regrettable that I have become the center stage of controversy. Given the veracity of the public concerns and in the best interest of the art form I wish to forego my place in the upcoming calypso final. I hereby formally announce my withdrawal from the said competition.”
The popular calypsonian however continued to deny that he wrote any lyrics on his hand saying that despite the public’s view he had done nothing wrong and that his decision to step aside was to safeguard the art form on the island.
A planned press conference on Friday by the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) was cancelled following Hunter’s announcement. However, president of the DCA Ras Kelley said that the association was in full support of de Hunter.
