Dr Bernard Sorhaindo of the Class of 59, was born on January 18, 1934 to parents Nora and Clive Sorhaindo, he was the third of ten siblings five brothers and 5 sisters.

Bernie will be remembered by his colleagues and many friends for his enthusiastic pursuit of his profession, and the loving care he gave his patients. He became a legend in Dominica and the neighbouring islands where he did much to improve the standard of care in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

For his work he received many accolades including being honoured as one of the 100 Great Dominicans of the 20th century. The award Order of the British Empire was also bestowed on him.

He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and also as a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and was honoured by the West Indies Section of the American College.

Dr Sorhaindo was also the recipient of the UWI Medical Alumni Award of Excellence at the UWI Medical Reunion in the Bahamas in 2003, as it was thought that his contribution to his country epitomized the lofty aims stated for the University at its inception.

He is survived by his loving wife Althea, 3 children Mark and Arlene both medical graduates of UWI, David, his 8 grandchildren, his brothers and sisters.

We will always remember Bernie as the perfect gentleman who was loyal to his friends and associates. Dr Sorhaindo was also a lay minister and very active in his church.

May his soul rest in peace and perpetual light shine on him.
