St Lucia government not in favor of importing water

TheDominican.net Newsdesk

General Manager of the Dominica Water and Sewerage Company (DOWASCO) Bernard Etinoffe has clarified the situation concerning the supply of water to St Lucia.

Last week, several news outlets including the Dominican.net reported that DOWASCO had started supplying water to the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA). Etinoffe however informed the Dominican.net today that contrary to the reports, no such shipments had started.

He confirmed that discussions were held with the SLHTA and that he had indicated his company’s willingness to supply “up to two million gallons of water a week,” but that no firm commitment was made.

Meanwhile, Anthony Bowen in his capacity as President of the SLHTA addressed the issue of importing water in an exclusive interview with the Government Information Service in St Lucia on Monday.

Bowen said that while his association had previously written to DOWASCO and held exhaustive discussions on the logistics of importing water, his association decided to shelve the idea for the time being.

According to Bowen “ ….it was made abundantly clear that the government was not in favor of importing water, we have opted to leave that choice out of our deliberations while we continue using WASCO’s (St Lucia Water and Sewerage Company) measurement and hoping that the rains will come in time to replenish our reservoirs and dam.”
