Members from the Windward Caribbean Kulture (WCK) band out of Dominica were reportedly held at the V.C. Bird International Airport for over three hours on Sunday evening by immigration officials.
The band was reportedly allowed to enter the country after the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) intervened. WCK was contracted by the ALP to play at their Labour Day celebrations which was held at Fort James.
Speaking to the Antigua Sun on the issue, Deputy Political Leader of the ALP Gaston Browne explained that the United Progressive Party (UPP) had initially contracted WCK, but the band later changed its mind and decided to work with the opposition party instead.
According to a local promoter close to the band, no contracts were signed with the UPP and the ALPs offer was more favourable so the band made what was the more lucrative choice.
He said in the absence of a contract, the band returned the UPPs deposit.
According to Browne, members of the ALP went to the airport and demanded that they release the band. He said before they did that, ALP had sent attorney-at-law John Fuller to get them out but he was allegedly thrown out of the airport by the police.
Chester Hughes went up to the airport and told them not to let them in. We went up there with about 400 people and demanded that they let them out, Browne added.
When contacted by the Antigua Sun, Parliamentary Representative for All Saints East & St. Luke Chester Hughes said he was unable to comment on the matter because he was taken up with the Labour Day activities at Ffryes.
Hughes has promised to speak to the issue today.
