National Under-13 coach Thomas Kentish, has lauded the efforts of his players during the just concluded St. Kitts Under-13 Invitational tournament.

After finishing third in the round robin competition behind Barbados and last years champions, Trinidad & Tobago, Dominica captured the Ten10 format of the tournament defeating Barbados by seven wickets in the finals.

According to the former Windward Island off-spinner, the team played good cricket throughout the tournament and deserved to walk away with the title.

I really want to congratulate the youngsters for the way that they played. I must say that they put in a lot of hard work and it did pay off, Kentish said.

It was indeed a proud moment for us. What made it more significant is the fact that we defeated both Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados to win the championship. As you are aware, these are the two teams which defeated us in the round robin format.

We have always played well in St. Kitts, and really, we did live up to that expectation. All our guys chipped in and it was a total team effort.

Kentish pointed to Dominicas Most Valuable Player Chad Phillip who batted brilliantly top score 276 runs, and Kimran George who was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

He said Aljai Liverpool, who was voted as the Ten10 MVP and wicketkeeper, Gian Benjamin, were also impressive. Kentish indicated that his teams success was due primarily to the cricket programme embarked upon by the Sports Division over the years.

The success that we enjoyed at the tournament can be attributed directly to the cricket programme of the Sports Division. Guys like Trevor Shillingford and others have expended a lot of time and effort and we are now reaping the benefits. It shows that we have in place the right structure which enables us to achieve, Kentish pointed out.

To beat teams like Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados is really commendable because these countries have good programmes. The mere fact that we can compete with them and be victorious means that we are doing the right things at the junior level.

I only wish that the senior guys could emulate some of the youngsters and actually take a page from their book. E-mail to a friend
