Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- A magistrate in St Joseph, Dominica has granted bail in the sum of $100 000 to Andrew Armour following his court appearance today on manslaughter charges for the accidental death of Casey Schulman, a visiting American student on December 1, 2012.

The Prosecution also asked the court to prevent Armour from captaining any boat until the matter is heard in court. His lawyer Gena Dyer challenged the request saying that this was Armour’s livelihood at stake. In the end, the request was denied.

Armour was piloting a boat filled with American tourists when it struck the 22 year old Schulman who had earlier gone into the water when the boat made a stop at a local beach.

At the time, the fourth-year foreign affairs major was part of a study at sea group of 54 students from the University of Virginia, who were visiting the island.

Armour is a leading whale expert and is known around the world for his pioneering work with the more than 40 whale species that can be found in the waters around Dominica. He is affectionately known as the whale whisperer for his ability to communicate effectively with the giant creatures.

The maximum sentence for manslaughter is life imprisonment.

No date has been set for his next court appearance.
