Gold discovery in Haiti’s interior gives hope

Gold galore in Haiti.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (TDN) -- A report out of Haiti says that a mining company is drilling around the clock to determine how to get to reserves of gold, silver and copper discovered in exploratory drilling during the past year.

The precious metals found deep below the country’s Northern interior is said to be worth potentially $20 billion. In neighboring Dominican Republic, mining the other side of this seam of precious metals will begin later this year in one of the world's largest gold deposits: 23 million ounces worth about $40 billion.

The announcement of the gold find in Haiti has left many residents feeling hopeful that the gold and other precious metals will be their ticket out of crippling poverty.

Haiti is a deeply impoverished country that is still recovering from the devastating quake of January 2010 and news of the gold find is rare good news for a country accustomed to receiving bad news.

The same movements in the earth responsible for the devastating earthquake are also credited with forcing the gold, silver and copper up through the molten earth’s crust.
