Rio de Janerio, Brazil (TDN) -- Four Dominica boxing hopefuls are facing off in the 2012 American Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament in Brazil hoping to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Already all four have survived the original round of eliminations held on May 5, 2012.
Christopher Joseph, Lucien Hewlette, Rowain Christopher, and Lenon Baptiste will need to win in their various categories to qualify. Previously, the men had received training in England at the Wolverhampton Amateur Boxing Club, and appear set to compete.
Already, Christopher Joseph is through to the Quarterfinals of the super heavyweight category and will take on Simon Kean of Canada on May 9 for a chance to go through to the semifinals scheduled for May 11.
The winner of the Joseph V Kean contest will take on either Leonado Tarboda of Argentina or Ytalo Perea of Ecuador in the semifinal round.
In the welterweight division another Dominican hopeful Lucien Hewlette is through to the round of sixteen where he will first need to defeat Gabriel Maestre of Venezuela and then take on the winner of the Prichard Colon of Puerto Rico V Leviticus Hield of the Bahamas for a chance in the quarterfinal berth on May 9.
Also in the round of sixteen is Lenon Baptiste but this time in the light heavyweight division. Baptiste will have to beat Joel Kirby of Antigua convincingly and will then face either Leonardo Cabanerio of Venezuela or Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in the quarterfinal berth scheduled for May 8.
In the middleweight division, Rowain Christopher will hope to defeat Andrew Fermin of Trinidad when they meet on May 7 in the round of sixteen. If successful, he will still need to get past either Stan Stanisclasse of Haiti or Jose Espinoza of Venezuela for a chance to compete in the quarterfinal round scheduled for May 9.
The four men representing a rejuvenated Dominican boxing group will be hoping to be left standing and to book their tickets to the summer Olympics in London when the competition comes to an end on May 12.
