Marigot – Dominica (TDN) Police in Dominica were over the weekend continuing their search for three armed men who were involved in a brazen daylight robbery of the Marigot Credit Union on Friday afternoon.

The three men escaped after reportedly exchanging fire with the Police who happened to be on patrol in the area at the time of the crime.

One other man was not so lucky after been shot in the face by Police. He survived and is been held under guard at the country’s main hospital in Roseau.

The men who conducted the robbery had just a few hours before attacked a Canadian couple vacationing on the island. The two were not hurt but their rental vehicle was seized and apparently used in the robbery.

Police say the men exhibited a great deal of sophistication and appeared to be wearing bullet proof vests when they engaged Police in the gun fight.

The robbery is just the latest in a series of crimes targeting tourists and financial institutions on the island. In January of this year, two armed men raided the offices of Money Gram in Roseau and made away with well over $200 000. They were however quickly arrested by Police and most of the money was recovered.

It is not clear how much was taken in the latest robbery but the Police have expressed some concern about the seeming rise in crimes and are calling on the public for greater support in helping to apprehend those responsible.
