The Guyana government appointed Clive Lloyd as head of the Interim Management Committee for cricket. |
Despite intervention by CARICOM Secretary General Irwin LaRocque in the ongoing dispute over the management of cricket between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the Guyana government, the parties appear no closer to an agreement.
The dispute surrounds the appointment by the Guyana government of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) headed by former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd to oversee cricket operations in that country.
However, the WIBC has refused to acknowledge the IMC noting that it will “not recognize or approve any entity other than the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) as the authorized governing body for cricket in Guyana.”
In the midst of the dispute, both the IMC and the GCB named competing cricket squads and captains, with the IMC appointing Ramnaresh Sarwan and the GCB appointing Shivnarine Chaderpaul. In the end, neither was selected as Chanderpaul was granted leave to play in the Bangladesh Premier League and Sarwan was not given consideration by the GCB.
With the dispute dragging on, the WIBC announced that Guyana will play all their four scheduled four day games in the Regional Tournament overseas. The first two games will be held in Dominica and the other two at a date to be decided. The Guyana team has already arrived in Dominica.
The seven regional teams of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and Combined Campuses will be playing in the four-day tournament for the Headley/Weekes Trophy and a cash prize of US $12,500. The runners-up will receive $5,500.
More importantly, the decision was also taken by the WIBC to move the third test match between Australia and the West Indies from the National Stadium in Guyana. On Sunday Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica announced that a decision had been taken to have the third test scheduled for April 23 – 27, 2012 to be moved to Dominica’s Windsor Park Stadium.
However, this has not been confirmed by the WIBC who would only say that they will announce their position with regard to the 3rd Digicel Test “after discussions with other stakeholders.”
Meanwhile, the WICB has restated its full support to the Government of Guyana’s Interim Management Committee functioning as an advisory body and has appealed to the Government of Guyana to allow the GCB access to its offices in order that it can proceed with the management of cricket in Guyana.
