Dominican man sentenced to over ten years for rape and indecent assault of two minors

BVI (TDN)-A judge in the British Virgin Island (BVI) has sentenced 54 year old Camillus ‘Jim’ Parris of Dominica to a prison term of eleven years and three months after he was found guilty of rape and indecent assault charges.

Parris was arrested and charged in April 2010 for the rape and indecent assault of seven and nine year old sisters. The court was told that when Parris arrived in the BVI from Dominica in 2007 he was staying at the home of the father of the two sisters.
The nine year old revealed that soon after his arrival she came home from school and was watching television when Parris called her to his bedroom. She refused to go, but Parris grabbed her forced her back into his room where he proceeded to remove her pants and underwear, and fingered her private parts. She pleaded with him to stop, but he continued the action for some time.
Regarding the seven year old, she told the court that sometime in 2008, the defendant called her into his room. She said no, but he took her inside, undressed her, placed her on the bed and forcefully had sex with her. Despite her screams and pleading he refused to stop. It was only when she bit him on his shoulder that he relented.
On a separate occasion, Parris approached the seven year old pushed his hand up her skirt and rubbed her private parts.
The girls did not report the incidents until April 2010 during Child Abuse Month. A police detective was giving a speech on child abuse at the school where they attended and after the speech, they went to the Guidance Counselor and told her of the incidents.
The Police immediately launched an investigation and both minors were taken to the hospital and examined. It was revealed that the seven year-old was infact violated.
On March 31, a nine-member jury took several hours to unanimously find Parris guilty of raping and molesting the two minors. At today’s sentencing by Justice Indra Hariprashad-Charles, the married father of three children was told that he will spend at least the next ten years in jail.
Parris was sentenced to ten years in prison for rape and fifteen months in prison for each of the two counts of indecent assault. The sentencing for both counts of indecent assault will run concurrently, but consecutively with the rape charge.
He will begin serving his sentence in May 2011.
