SAVARIN UNVEILS GOVERNMENT’S PLANS TO TRANSFORM ROSEAU INTO THE PREMIER CAPITAL CITY OF THE OECS

 

Roseau, DominicaJanuary 19th 2005……Parliamentary Representative for the Roseau Central Constituency and Tourism Minister, Hon. Charles Savarin, has outlined government’s plans to transform Roseau into the premier Capital city of the OECS.

 

Mr. Savarin made the announcement at the eighth inaugural meeting of the Roseau City Council recently. The Roseau Central MP highlighted the  $60 million Roseau Water and Sanitation Project which was conceptualized in the early 1990s but completed in 2003, the $45 million Roseau Road Reinstatement Project to be funded in part by the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development and the redevelopment of the Goodwill Road from the Boathouse to the Deep Water Harbour now under construction at a cost of $4 million.

 

The Tourism Minister also outlined a number of other major capital projects that are intended to transform the physical landscape of Roseau. These include:

 

·        The Redevelopment of the Melville Hall to Roseau Road through a  soft loan of $45 million from the French Government

 

·        The Road Improvement and Maintenance (RIM) Project intended to upgrade the roads in the Roseau Valley to include Trafalgar, Laudat and Wotton Waven

 

·        The redevelopment of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Roseau

 

·        The rehabilitation of the Roseau to Portsmouth Highway using grant funds from the PRC

 

·        The construction of the Windsor Park Stadium in Roseau, costing in the region of $35 million

 

·        The construction of a new landfill at Fond Cole at a cost of $9.9 million.

 

The Tourism Minister also revealed a number of other projects identified by government that would enhance the city of Roseau. These include: the development of a new cruise ship berth and cruise village at Woodbridge Bay in Roseau as well as the extension of the Roseau and Portsmouth cruise ship berths to accommodate the new mage ships; the redevelopment of the Ferry Terminal in Roseau using funds under the EU-funded Eco-Tourism Development Programme; the development of a hotel and convention center on the site of the Public Works Garage; the development of a vendors arcade for the Bay Front Vendors and the construction of a new Health Centre in Roseau.
