Ministry of Tourism and NDC Officials Visit “Pirates of the Caribbean
2/3” Sites
Roseau, Dominica: (March 18,
2005) --- As part of a familiarization tour by Officials of the Ministry of
Tourism and the National Development Corporation (NDC), a delegation comprising
of Hon. Charles Savarin, Minister for Tourism, Irwin LaRocque, Permanent
Secretary, Vincent Philbert, General Manager NDC and Sobers Esprit, Deputy
Director of Tourism, visited the several sites to be used during the upcoming filming
of “Pirates of the Caribbean 2/3” in Dominica.
The delegation was met on
location at Cabana Beach,
by Mr. Robin Higgs, Locations Manager for “pirates 2/3”. The minister and his tourism officials first
stopped at the site at the Cabana Beach
in Londonderry on the north east coast where work is
on-going on the preparation of this site for filming a river and beach scene.
The delegation then traveled to see progress of work on the site at Hampstead
Beach No.1 where a half-mile road leading to the beach was constructed by the
production company. The next stop was at the Hampstead
River where a bridge was being
constructed. The delegation also made a brief stop at the Blenheim Quarry. The
next stop was at the main set at Autou in Vieille Case where Disney is
constructing a 16th century church to be used as one of the main
sets during the filming process.
Minister Savarin and his team
were very pleased with the progress made so far by the production company in
the preparation leading to filming of this major film in Dominica.
He also expressed his and his Ministry’s great level of satisfaction on the
high number of locals Disney has involved in the preparatory work and the
overall impact that production of this film has on the local economy. In his overall assessment of the work so far
Minister Savarin stated: “as minister responsible for tourism I am extremely
happy with the progress made in having this production come to Dominica.
As a government we believe that the Pirates of the Caribbean
will contribute significantly to the local economy and will be a major
promotional tool for the island in the long run.”
Pirates of the Caribbean
2/3 will be filmed on location on several sites across Dominica
including Cabana Beach,
Indian River, Vieille Case, the
High Meadow in Soufriere, Titou Gorge, Blenheim Quarry, Hamstead
Beach and Pagua
Bay. Filming will run from May to
June and is expected to generate much economic activity especially in the local
tourism sector.
