Symposium Planning Goes On

by: Thomson Fontaine
Oganizers of the Dominica Symposium are pressing ahead with plans to stage the second Diaspora Symposium from October 25 to November 1, 2002 as a lead up to the World Creole Music Festival scheduled for November 1 - 3. Hundreds of Dominicans living overseas are expected to join with local residents at that time to focus on ways in which their efforts can be combined to assist in Dominica's development.

The Symposium is being viewed as a unique opportunity for overseas-based Dominicans to stand up in unity with their fellow Dominicans. The need to identify with the struggles of the Dominican people has taken up added significance given the current economic crisis in Dominica. Organizers have been encouraged with the hugely successful Diaspora Symposium held in New York last year ( see related story), and with the support being expressed by Dominicans at home and abroad.

. The symposium will provide an opportunity for Dominicans with various skills and expertise to donate some of this expertise to Dominica. For instance, there will be free medical, legal, dental, business and immigration clinics. There will be a focus on business partnerships through joint ventures as well as exploring ways in which the Diaspora can immediately impact on the current situation in Dominica.

The event is also viewed as an ideal opportunity for returning Dominicans to renew ties with their country, introduce the children born overseas to Dominica and participate more fully in events in the country. Visiting overseas Dominicans will engage their local counterparts in several friendly games of cricket, football and basketball.

Overseas Dominicans are encouraged to learn more about this Dominican event through the website http://www.rosiedouglas.com. You may contact theDominican.net for more information, or click here to access the online registration page.
