Dominican Appointed Resident Tutor at Harvard University By Shermain Bicque- New Chronicle
Twenty five year old Janelle Prevost, Dominicas 1995 Island Scholar has been appointed a Resident Tutor in Computer Science at Harvard University for the academic year 2004-2005. Miss Prevost studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she also continues to serve as an Educational Counselor.
After graduating from MIT, she worked for two years with Oracle Corporation as a Senior Applications Engineer.
Prevost entered Harvard University in September 2003, when she began a joint Master in Public Policy and Master in Business Administration (MPP/MBA) programme at Harvards John F. Kennedy School of Government (KSG) and the Harvard Business School (HBS).
In an exclusive interview with The Chronicle, Prevost explained that she felt the need to supplement her technical background with training in policy and management. My MBA/MPP is about bridging the public-private sector gap creating a new model of governance in Dominica and the Caribbean becoming a public sector leader who not only understands technology and the policy framework it requires, but also can manage the risk and uncertainty surrounding decisions about how to transform technology and innovation into certain, sustainable development. she said.
Prevost explained that the chief responsibility of any Resident Tutor is to work with the students; virtually everything else proceeds from this point. The position will include representing my discipline, tutoring in and promoting understanding of it among the undergraduates, advising students on fellowship possibilities, helping them make some very difficult choices about their careers, writing recommendations, and generally being there for the students when they need help; all this, of course, in addition to my academic programme at HBS and KSG.
She explained she had been constantly looking for opportunities to serve her country. When I learned that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Telecommunications Union and the French Government were sponsoring a Community Resource Internet Centre (CoRICs) project in the OECS, I felt it was something I could possibly contribute to, given my background and interest in technology policy and entrepreneurship.
I therefore applied to the UNDP for an internship with the project, and they were very happy to have me join for the summer. I have been providing support to the project since June 1st, working closely with the Ministry of Local Government, in the communities of Good Hope, Petite Soufriere, and Paix Bouche.
I am winding things up this week to return to Harvard, she said. Prevost is the daughter of Senator Norris Prevost and his wife Attorney Joan K R Prevost.
