Six cruiseships arrive in Dominica by Sean Douglas, Government Press Secretary
Roseau, Dominica The Cruise sector in Dominica has been given a major boost today with the arrival of six (6) cruise vessels on the island, unprecedented in the fifteen (15) year history of the cruise sector in Dominica.
The Destiny is docked at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth, the Masdam is berthed at the Ferry Terminal, the Braemar is at the Roseau Fisheries Complex and the Mandalay is at Anchorage. The Aida Vita and the Arion are docked at the Woodbridge Bay Port.
The National Development Corporation and the Carnival Development Committee provided some entertainment to some of the over 5000 cruise ship passengers on the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard. The visitors got a taste of the real mas with a scintillating performance from sakis.
Taxi operators, vendors and the owners of local restaurants and bars in Roseau are all hoping to benefit from the influx of the over 5000 cruise passengers expected today.
Cruise tourism is a major component of Dominicas growing tourism sector. The 2004/2005 cruise ship season was the best ever, attracting a record 383,614 cruise passengers to our shores. The calendar year 2005 saw a slight decrease in the number of cruise passengers.
A total of 292,262 cruise passengers are expected for the 2005/2006 Cruise Ship Season.
