A 49 year old man accused of committing sexual acts against a 6 year old girl has been denied bail by a local magistrate and ordered held until his trial.

The man whose name cannot be revealed until proven guilty in a court of law appeared before Magistrate Pearl Williams  on 14 July 2022.

In attempting to curry favor from the court the accused denied that he was a flight risk and also pointed to the fact that he was the custodian of two minor children.

The prosecution however strenuously argued against the granting of bail describing the accused as a flight risk, and pointing to the possibility that he may interfere with witnesses.

Dominica has been reeling with hundreds of cases of grown men having sexual intercourse with minors. The court system has not always handed out severe punishment, leading to a backlash among the public.

This past Tuesday, Paul Guiste, a father of 11 residing in Marigot, was sentenced to prison for four years, eight months and 21 days, after he pleaded guilty to unlawful Sexual Connection and indent assault against a 19-year-old girl.

In June, Peter Lovell a 67 year old man of Glanvillia, Portsmouth pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful sexual connection against a 6 year old girl. He remains in prison awaiting formal sentencing.

That same month a 22 year old repeat offender from Woodfordhill was allowed to walk free without facing any jail time after been found guilty of attempted rape of a 14 year old girl.

In the past few years, Dominica has averaged over 120 cases of reported sexual abuse against minors annually, topping the list of offenses against children.

Unfortunately, the court system has not yet caught up with the large number of cases and it appears that men continue to operate with impunity.
