United Workers Party (UWP) candidates Edison James and Hector John have both won reelection in the July 9 polls, which was called by prime minister Skerrit after their seats were declared vacant by house speaker Alix Boyd Knight.

James, a former prime minister won easily over the Dominica Labour Party’s (DLP) candidate Dayton Baptiste 661 to 131. John meanwhile made easy work of DLP’s Bentley Julian Royer 772 to 415.

In the Marigot constituency, voter turnout was way below that of the December 18, 2009 poll. At that time 1 059 persons voted compared to 792 in the most recent poll. In December James won by a margin of 833 to 226.

Meanwhile, in the Salisbury constituency, 1 319 persons voted in December compared to 1 187 on Friday. John successfully increased his margin of victory from 295 in December to 357.

The results appear to suggest that the people of Salisbury generally agreed with the position of the candidate to boycott Parliament.

Leader of the UWP Ron Green has congratulated the two candidates saying “the people are saying that the issue of democracy should not be pushed aside and that is what prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit has been doing. He has been trying to avoid the issue of electoral reform,”

James and John are not expected to continue with their boycott of parliament.
