Three young men murdered off the coast of Dominica

The Dominican.net Newsdesk

Police in Dominica are investigating the deaths of three young men who were found in a boat some twenty-six miles West of the village of Salisbury.

The three men ranging in age from 25 to 35 years old were found riddled with bullets in a boat drifting in the Caribbean Sea.

Police report that they first began investigating when rumors surfaced locally that the shooting had taken place at sea. A Coast Guard vessel was initially dispatched but after a thorough search returned.

The search was continued after several persons called the police insisting that the killings had taken place. A plane from the Regional Security System was subsequently dispatched and the boat was spotted drifting in the sea.

The lifeless bodies of the three men all believed to be from Dominica were taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where autopsies will be conducted.

Police believe that the killings may be drug related and have appealed for assistance from the public in helping to solve the murders.

The murder of the three men brings to thirteen the number of murders in Dominica so far for this year.

The local talk show programs were filed with angry callers disturbed at the obvious rise in crime in Dominica. Many believe that the police is ill equipped to deal with the rising crime and called on government to do more to combat rising youth unemployment.

I call for the government's assistance as well because as a young employed person in Dominica we feel the pinch we try to get ahead and then more taxes hold us back and the pay never increases even though the cost of living keeps rising. The rich keep getting richer and the poor keep sucking salt.
Something needs to be done because if young people cannot find gainful employment or something positive to occupy their time then the death toll will continue to rise and I for one don't want to be next

Drastic action is needed to turn these young men around. This is an unacceptable level of violence.

Bro Skerrit here is what Dominica is all about--the Columbia of the Lesser Antilles.....while you and your pals are devsing ways of rigging the next elections, our boys and girls are dying under your watch--who cares???? As long as ALBA is pumping $$$$$$ into your pockets- and your security detail gets bigger and meaner-------all is well---well guess what????? All is not well.

It,s so sad to see this is now happening on our door step and hope it can be resolve quickly.young people are trying to make a living but is going about it the wrong way, the government need to wake up make a stance and help our young people that,s what they were put in power to do so they need to be more positve and help our young men and women.

SEEMS TO ME EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THIS COUNTRY THE GOVERNMENT GATES THE BLAME.PARENTS MUST BE RESPONSIBLE TO GROW THEIR CHILDREN IN THE FEAR OF GOD SO THAT WHEN THEY GROW OLD THEY WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT.WE MUST ALL REMEMBER THAT THERE IS SOMEONE BIGGER THAN SKERRIT AND THAT IS THE DEVIL.STOP BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT FOR EVERYTHING.

WE HAVE A RIGHT TO CHOOSE OUR OWN PATHS AND DESTINY.SOME OF US CHOOSE THE TO DO WRONG SOME CHOOSE TO DO RIGHT.THE FRUITS OF DOING WRONG IS DEATH AND DESTRUCTION.GOVERNMENT HAS ENOUGH IN PLACE TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG PEOPLE TO EDUCATE THEMSELVES,BE BUSINESS MEN ETC.I WISH WHAT IS AVAIABLE NOW IN THIS COUNTRY WAS AVAILABLE FOR ME WHEN I WAS IN MY TWENTYS.STOP BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT FOR ALL WHAT HAPPENS IN THE COUNTRY.

Both the government and the parents have a role to play.
It is the parent's duty to give their children a proper education ; they bear the Greatest Responsability in children futur behaviour.
( why some behave properly and some not ? same government ! )

The government duty is to establish an economical context that encourages employment and favorises investments ( I guess a lot has to be improved for achieving this ) ; it is also their duty to organise security in the country .

I fear that this rise in unsecurity in DA is going to be very harmful for the tourism industry as well as for investors policies.

We all know of parents obligation and role, however this s a bigger picture involving adults, all over 21 years old. Why would so many of our young men go down that path. Parents run the home yes, then the young ones fly out of the nest into the bigger world. The goverment is then big daddy to ensure our youths have a safe and secure and promising place to land once they fly outside that nest. The thing is who or what is there to recieve them....more bad parents (government leaders) who are themselves (like the boys paents)areequally irresponsble like their parents and involve in all kind schemes of bobol, tax evasion, bib bobol, quick fix money etc. So sure the PM and his boys have to accept some blame and repsonsibility. There is no investnment but hand outs at the red clinic and buying poor people with snmall money and hosuing materials. Our youth, our people have pride, they want opportunities for jobs not handouts. So taking the big risk and heading for the high seas, pirates and bullies wil hunt our dear youths down and shoot them, because it is a hard life for our youth on land in Dominica and inthe stormy seas outside of Dominica. We are crying out for help for good governance, focus on real development and not mediocre from small mind politicians headed by the PM and his blindfolded ministers. God Help us please, we need change.

That's a murder rate of 0.1857 per 1000 population, moving Dominica up from 28th in the world in 2002 to 6th in 2009 (and still counting). Rapidly approaching the killing fields of Columbia and Jamaica - a hell of an achievement for a Nature Island. Seems nobody cares and nobody is in charge. We Dominicans should all be ashamed of our "progress."

It would seem, like many people have noted, that the powers that be are in denial. They probably look at the absolute number and think "oh it is less than the number in Jamaica". What they appear not to appreciate is the crime RATE and the year on year increase in crime. That's what is important.

It is disastrous, really.

CONCERN CITIZEN

I am very much saddened and even more so rethinking of relocating or visiting Dominica, listening and reading all the comments, there are many issues which are not being mention which one of them is Greed, these young men and women want to rise too fast, they want to live a lavish life without working hard.
These poor young men are victims of the big boys in DA, it's people. Listening to news coming from other Caribbean island and hearing of the high level of crime in DA, this is not a surprise to me at all. Dominica Government is not assisting the youth of the country, cost of living is at its peak, salary is low, not too many jobs in the island, men with high positions are exploiting young boys and girls for jobs, deportees and wanted criminals are walking on the streets in DA as their safe haven, Dominican women going out to foreign countries and bring these criminals to DA, what is expected. Dominica is ours to build and protect each and everyone of us need to come together as one, work together to save and retake our Lovely and Beautiful Country from the hands of these criminals,we cannot allow drug, drug dealers, gangsters and hooligans to destroy our country, Oh Dominica I Pray that the Almighty will deliver you and your people, right now i am listening on-line to all the lovely song, and it is hurtful and very sad listening to what is happening, young people drugs is not the answer, crime is not the answer, your future and the future of Our country is not bright, Level of crime in Dominica being rated 6th in the world is unacceptable, no matter in what part of the world Dominican are, their hopes and dreams are to return to their country one day, we all live Dominica for a better future and many might not return, so be it. people residing outside of Dominica who invested their hard earned monies in building houses, sending money to their families back home, will reconsider coming back to DA to enjoy their retirement, sad, sad, sad
May God Protect Our Country and It's people

No one has indicated that everything that happens in Dominica the government gets the absolute blame, please read the articles again and wise up. Government has a responsibility and Must take and accept some of the blame. There are too many distractions in our cioubntry now with too many allegations of corruption , bobol etc...okk? A young man I worked with says to me, if this government people can get away with bobol, why can`t I. This is a poor excuse from this young man, yes but the fact it it is said and the youth are noticing, just like children in house who observe bad parents and do not talk but at some stage they react.
Dominica is not in a programme course with a national plan to engage our people , let alone out youths. The government is involved in creating a dependency and mendicancy (beggars)state with serious hand outs and to futher establish a welfae state. When these youths see their parents hang out or lineup for hours outside the RED CLINIC created by the Prime Monster for some (pieces of silver)money and handouts this is lowering the dignity and pride of a people, the country is now in the wrong hands of people who know nothing of organised development. I am in government and I tell you ...I know. these guys are inexpereince, lack vision and the first mistake we made was to put a 31 year old to run this country, WE need to take our country back and NOW. It is urgent. Ther country need discipline, job creation, and not a Prime Minister who gets Domijica involved in schemes ,secretely and have to appear in Court in Tortola at the contry`s expense. The PM cannot be trusted and his cabinet members do not know of the secretdeals he signed with these people.
God help us

oh....I agree wholeheartedly.....I feel for my country. My fellow Dominicans please we have to get rid of these guys. They are a dnager to the country......

Hello to you all.
This dose not make good reading;-(

If anyone can help me, Why is the leader of your country so Young?
What polices were offered to make the people vote for the current goverment.

Well, what is it that does not make good reading....please explain....? On the young leader question, well, Tony Astaphan admitted that he lied to the public that the UWP was corrupt and that is how they got out of office and promoted this yong face which now proves to have been a fraud......and big disappointment.
Lots of corruption (bobol) issues etc...etc.

"EGL", I would love to know where you got your statistics - repeated by Athie Martin on Between You and Me yesterday. While I admit that 13 murders is too much for our beautiful island, I know for certain that Dominica does not rank 6th in the world in terms of murder rate per capita. Do you have any idea where Venezuela, Jamaica, Belize, St Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Columbia, St Lucia to name just a few rank? Stop spreading propaganda! And for those of you who are not aware, Dominica was #28 on nationmaster's list in previous years, as a # of countries, including many in the Caribbean with much higher rates, do not have their statistics reported.

The fact is once you get the statistics what would you do with it? Making user friendly, tourist friendly etc. For size, population, closed and small communities, it just makes these numbers high. While the public were debatig stronghly the rise in crime and violence in Dominica, the government chose to deny it saying that people were talking out of line, that same week two murders involving two youths took place in Grand Bay. The Paliamentary representative for the area Fabien quickly called a commuity meeting to address the concern, no more denial reality hit the south and Dominica. At that meeting the parliamentary Representative said that GrandBay has nothing for our youths employment wise, no fish, no bananas, no nothing. What does that say? Go to the villages all you see is young men, fathers, from 16 to 45 up about in the streets. After these murders in Grand Bay the US company who were to establish a medical school in Grand Bay backed off in fear as the crime rate there is rising like mad. What does that say to you? Should we be altering the statistics to say 26th in world , what does that say to us,. We are already at a disadavatage, limited employment opportunities, poor government investment, too much hand outs, too much dependency, all of the international agencies who visit here say so to their conterparts. This is the crime, and it may even esclalate the figures. But you see, the hand outs it is a proud government policy to have people come to Roseau and beg. That I do not hear you talk or write about. How low again our people must stoop for help. The Labour paty motto is no longer "ALL SHALL EAT", BUT IT IS "SOME WILL EAT". The big wigs are really eating while our money is wasted in Tortola, was it not for Lennox we would not know.
My friend there is rampant crime from the top, they get away with it with good and well paid patrotic lawyers saying it was a mistake, and the poor as usual are the victims and punished because they cannot afford the legal fees and cannot do the political munbo jumbo with lawyers. See , what I mean. The reality is there, open your eyes and do not be distracted.

Hey..my friend..good feedback..thanks.. I take it you are very familiar with what is going on back home. I just caot take all this coruptiopn thing in Doominica today and that Prime Minister is involved. It is sad..I wish my country well.
I thionk we need new leaders...
