Windward Islands Cricket Board president Emmanuel Nanthan believes the selection of Andre Fletcher to the West Indies senior team should serve as motivation for other players in Dominica and the sub-region.
The talented 21-year-old Grenadian batsman was drafted into the West Indies 14-man squad for the first three One Day International (ODI) matches and the Twenty20 fixture against Australia.
“Really, I want to congratulate Andre Fletcher for gaining selection on the West Indies team,” Nanthan said.
“He is a young man from the Windward Islands who has caught the eyes of the selectors. I want to wish him well as he goes out to represent the Windward Islands and the West Indies.
The uncapped Fletcher, who represented West Indies at the ICC Youth (Under-19) World Cup in Sri Lanka two years ago, joins St. Lucian Darren Sammy as Windwards’ players in the West Indies unit.
“Here, in Fletcher, we have another cricketer from the Windward Islands who will be representing the West Indies and this certainly augurs well for the future development our cricket.
"His selection on the team should serve as a motivating factor for other promising cricketers,” said Nanthan, who is also president of the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA).
Traditionally, the West Indies team set-up has been dominated by players from Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, and Jamaica and Nanthan said Fletcher’s selection only shows that there are opportunities available for Dominicans and other sub-regional players.
“His selection clearly indicates that there are endless opportunities for young and talented cricketers, not only in Dominica, but in the region by extension.
"They should see that the possibility exists for them to make the team as well.
"In order for them to achieve, they must take their game seriously and work hard at it,” Nanthan said.
