No Salaries for Public Workers by Thomson Fontaine
Acting Prime Minister Charles Savarin has indicated that striking public servants would not be paid for the days they were out on protest action. He told a news conference that the government made no agreement to pay the workers in a joint statement issued on Thursday, which brought the eight-day strike to a close.
The Acting Prime Minister also disclosed that public workers would not receive their monthly salary on time because of the just-ended strike action. He cited inadequate time for processing salaries and the non-collection of revenue over the eight days the workers stayed off the job. Savarin did not give an indication as to when the state workers would be paid.
The impact of the strike as well as the continuing deterioration in the economy was expected to impact negatively on national carnival celebrations taking place over the weekend and early next week.
