Roseau, Dominica (TDN) - Two days after the passage of Hurricane Maria in Dominica the death toll have risen to 32 and there are fears that this could rise further as rescue efforts get underway and authorities access previously cut off villages.

In the village of Point Mitchel 13 persons were swept away in their homes by fast rising water while 5 died in a similar manner in the Northern village of Dos Dane. In addition, there were deaths in Dublanc (1), Morne Prosper (1), Grand Fond (1), Marigot (1), Woodfordhill (1), and Mahaut (2). Deaths were also reported in Delices and Grand Bay.

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit in speaking to the Antigua Broadcasting Services on Monday painted a grim picture of death and destruction revealing that homes capsized with people inside, other homes were washed away by rising water and yet others were carried by the wind.

He also noted that so far 15 persons have been buried and another 17 remain missing. The prime minister indicated that he feared the death toll could rise much further as rescue personnel make their way to villages that have been cut off from the rest of the island since the storm.

In 2015 32 persons died following the passage of Tropical Storm Erica.
