Sammy among Caribbean sports celebrities for Dominica charity event

Roseau, Dominica (TDN) Sports celebrities from across the Caribbean are scheduled to participate in a celebrity T20 match in Barbados to raise money for the Dominica relief effort.

Organised by the University of the West Indies (UWI), in partnership with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) the match will take place at the famed Barbados Oval on September 26. 2015.

West Indies Twenty20 captain Darren Sammy is among those who have already signed up to play. Others include. legendary West Indies and Trinidad and Tobago cricketer and world record holder Brian Lara, Trinidad and Tobago and former Manchester United footballer Dwight Yorke and Jamaican Olympian Yohan Blake.

The match will consist of a WICB President’s Celebrity XI against a UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Celebrity XI.

Sammy has expressed his profound sorrow at what happened in Dominica during the passage of Tropical storm Erika which left 35 people dead, scores homeless and the evacuation of an entire village of over 700 persons.

Several Caribbean countries have come to the aid of Dominica with a pledge of EC $ 1 million from St Kitts and Nevis US $100 000 each from Jamaica and the United States Virgin Islands , and EC $ 100 000 from St Vincent and the Grenadines. Several other countries have contributed relief supplies and personnel.

The government of Dominica estimates the damage to the country’s infrastructure in excess of US $ 250 million (EC $ 700 million), making it the most destructive storm in the country’s recent history.
