Roseau, Dominica (TDN) In a wide ranging news conference on Monday, members of the opposition Dominica United Workers Party (UWP) outlined their plans to “immediately ease the hardship and suffering of thousands of our fellow Dominicans,” if elected to government in the next general elections.

To this end, they promised that “the 15 percent VAT will be removed on all basic food items, medicines, school supplies and children clothing. In addition, all custom duties on personal effects imported through the crucial barrel trade will be removed.”

These are part of some of the wide ranging tax and fiscal measures that Dr. Thomson Fontaine head of the economic team says will put in place to address a deteriorating situation in the country where poverty continues to rise.

“Our efforts at tax reform will be backed up by aggressive enforcement to ensure that the benefits are passed on to the consumer. Team Dominica understands that the tax incentives will hurt government revenues but by reducing duty free privileges to many individuals, improving efficiency within the tax system, and growing the economy this revenue loss will be negated.

“In short we are committed to reversing the Dominica Labour Party practice of providing tax breaks and cushions to a few privileged friends and supporters of the party and providing those breaks to the large number of poor and suffering people in this country,” Fontaine added.
