Dominican voters form third largest foreign voting block in St Maarten

Philipsburg, St Maarten (TDN) --- Publication of figures from the St Maarten Voters Registry shows that 845 Dominicans out of a total of 21, 475 are registered to vote in Parliamentary elections scheduled for August 29, 2014. Eighty-nine candidates representing five political parties are scheduled to participate.

Voters from Dominica are the third largest block of foreign voters trailing the Dominican Republic (1,387), and St. Kitts and Nevis (946). Other foreign born populations registered to vote are Haiti (536), Anguilla (469), British India/India (451), United States (409), British Guiana/Guyana (340), Jamaica (231), St. Lucia (179), Trinidad and Tobago (133), China (112), and US Virgin Islands (101). A total of 9 070 voters or 42 percent were born outside of the kingdom.

Census data published in 2012 revealed that that immigrants from Dominica form the fourth largest group in that country, constituting about 7 percent of the island’s 42 000 inhabitants. There are 27,596 Dutch nationals compared to 6,197 persons from the Dominican Republic, 5,714 Haitians, 3,353 Jamaicans, 2,919 Dominicans, 2,580 Guyanese, 1,755 from India, 1,602 US citizens (924 born in the USA and 678 naturalised), 1,118 French, 1,107 British (naturalised, born in England and born in British territories) and 908 St. Lucians (TDN).
