Dominica to host first ever agriculture and forestry festival

Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Plans are on the way for the first-ever Agriculture and Forestry Festival which will be held during the week of May 12th to 17th, 2014 under the theme “Agriculture and Forestry: Our Sustainable Future.”

The Agri-Forestry Festival will present to the public, including visitors, a unique opportunity to experience all facets of Dominica’s agriculture and forest sectors in a warm and inviting environment.

The main event, an exhibition from Wednesday 14th May, 2014 will coincide with the formal opening of the modern Agricultural Centre in One Mile, Portsmouth.

The exhibition will feature livestock and crops ranging from varieties and new development in citrus, cocoa and coffee and other commercial crops to include onion and potato as well as traditional crops like Toupi Tambour, Wawa and Vanilla.

Updated information on Dominica’s Abattoir under construction will also be available. Expected on display are the best of local agricultural produce of varying kinds. The event will also showcase agro-processing, Flori-Culture/Horticulture and culinary arts among other areas.

Farmers and other members of the public will be educated on emerging issues and trends, pests and disease control to include Black Sigatoka. There will be youth as well as school participation through 4-H Clubs and Junior Achievers display of products. A youth symposium will also form part of activities for the week.

Competitions, a farmers’ forum, open garden walks, local food, music and entertainment, horseback riding at nearby stables, awards and prizes will form part of the package.

Farmers, agro-processors, agri-enterprises and other providers of agriculture services especially those on the North, North East and West Coast closer to Portsmouth are encouraged to participate.

A thanksgiving mass will bring the curtain down on Agri-Forestry Festival 2014.

The Agrifest is meant to add new perspectives, to stimulate new ways of thinking about Agriculture and Forestry and the contribution of these sectors to national development.
