Roseau, Dominica (TDN) -- Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox Linton has called on members of the Dominican public to boycott two independence events in protest over the unconstitutional election of Charles Savarin as president of Dominica.

Linton called for the boycott of the National Youth Rally and the military parade scheduled for November 3, 2013. According to Linton, the UWP “is calling for the boycott of the two independence events to protest the unconstitutional appointment of Charles Savarin as president of the Commonwealth of Dominica.”

In calling for the support of the public, Linton noted that it was important to send a strong message to the Skerrit administration that the public would not stand for his continued dismissal of the country’s constitution.

At issue is the manner in which the appointment was done without the required consultation with the opposition and the use of armed police to fortify the building where the swearing in ceremony was held.

Linton has repeatedly referred to the appointment as being by ‘gunpoint’ and called on Dominicans to simply ignore Savarin in the position of president. In addition, Linton has described Savarin as the most divisive figure in the history of Dominican politics.

He points to Savarin’s record of shutting down the country for 47 days in 1979 and for encouraging the mob to stone and destroy the properties of innocent government supporters. More recently, he pointed to Savarin’s call for a boycott of a local supermarket Brizee Mart, which resulted in the closure of that establishment and the loss of close to 80 jobs.

Meanwhile support for the call has largely fallen along political lines with supporters of the ruling Dominica Labour Party stating their opposition while UWP members have indicated that they will wholeheartedly support the call to show their disgust at the appointment of Savarin as president.
