Castle Bruce, Dominica (TDN) -- Delegates to an opposition United Workers Party (UWP) conference in Dominica has elected journalist Lennox Linton as its party’s new leader. Linton replaces former prime minister Edison James who recently resigned as leader of the party.
Claudius Sanford the party’s prospective candidate for the Carib Terriitory was elected as deputy Party leader. Ezekiel Bazil the prospective candidate for the Wesley constituency was elected party president while member for the Salisbury constituency Hector John was named vice president.
In accepting the position of leader of the opposition UWP, Linton promised that if his party formed the new government that it would embark on the building of an international airport that “will be part of a comprehensive sea and air access initiative that will facilitate a more productive engagement with the global community.”
Linton also promised to engage the Dominican Diaspora in helping to build the country and said that under his leadership the UWP would pursue a sustainable economic development policy that makes use of Dominica’s natural resources.
Elections are constitutionally due in early 2015 but political observers believe that prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit may call elections sometime during the first half of 2014.
