Pond Casse, Dominica (TDN) -- Dominica is today reeling from the news of the deaths of two members of the Dominica National Team who were killed in a vehicular accident in Pond Casse early Friday morning.

Coach of the National football team Kurt Hector was driving a vehicle with two other passengers when it plunged into a deep ravine opened up by heavy rains over the past few days.

Norran Jno Hope another member of the National team died along with Hector while team member Joslen Prince of Grand Fond survived and is being treated for his injuries.

The three members of the team were on their way to the airport to leave for the Windward Islands Football Tournament taking place in St Vincent over the weekend. Dominica’s participation in the games has since been cancelled in light of the accident.

Heavy rains over the past few days have inundated the entire country resulting in several landslides. Meanwhile, schools across the island were closed on Friday as the rains continued and river levels swelled to unprecedented levels.

Officials are calling on the public to be cautious and to avoid going outside unless they have to.
